Connect with bolts and washers, fasten wood to the top. Spray paint the crates before if desired. My sister laid them on they're side to have added storage.
You can also cut plywood to fit, cover it with water repellent outdoor fabric/filling, staple to the bottom of the wood, and place on the crates to use as cushioned seats - use the inside for storage. Combine in a row for a bench, or use individually for seats or informal ottomans. Works as gameroom or dorm room seating/storage too.
