If you painted it and maybe distressed it or added stenciling, you could still use it as it is. Just give it a different look. You could maybe remove the top and just use the bottom portion as a table. Here are some other ideas:

This is a nice piece and falls into the realm of furniture that has more than intrinsic value as a piece of furniture. It is a piece of history. If you brought it to me for modification I would probably send you away unless there was some damage that I could not restore.
Perhaps you could find a buyer on Craigslist and purchase something that you would like rather than destroying it.
when ever i deal with a vintage piece i want to know what its existing value is before i start messing with it.
I love it as is! Great book case (little dust).
This is a great piece of furniture. Unless it is damaged, I would find a place to put it. Remember, it can hold books, a collection, such as dolls. I have seen one used in a bathroom to store towels. Think outside of "china" and see what you can do with it.
start with removing the grill in front of the glass. do the doors open fully and do the shelves run across the entire piece? try opening the frame up for a book case, collection display area.
It has a very classic look... and I understand that it might not be your style....
you could up date it with paint.... but first... I would use at least one good coat of clear sealer on it.... this would prevent any paint from soaking into the wood grain and make it easier for you or someone else to strip down later.
It has and almost, art deco look to it... with a high gloss black or dark grey finish and some crystal or Hollywood glam hardware. Find a beautiful rich looking wall paper or mirrors to put on the back "wall" and it could be very striking to hold bar glass ware, china, towels, collectibles, etc.
Lori, have to agree with Ken, this is a beautiful piece of furniture with a lot of history, it would be a shame to take it apart... call an antique dealer and see what they will offer you it, or check out Craigslist/antique markets and get a realistic asking price...then sell it and buy what you do like.
If you really don't like it and it is not worth the money to sell it, I would suggest taking the door off (save it) replace with a solid door, remove the legs, get a chest or something sold to set the piece on so that it is taller, and then paint after following Marty's directions about putting on a clear coat first. I wouldn't do any fancy finish on it, just paint it.
I would do something totally different here! I would paint it a very bright white (shiny finish) with the front trim painted a shiny nickel/silver. Then I would replace the legs with silver hairpin legs. Totally new and modern, yet classic and easy to mix with other pieces.
It is a great cabinet and without wrecking it you could turn it into a great Bar. Check the finish on the outside to make sure it is OK . If it is not, get it fixed. Then on the inside, take out the wood shelves. Have a mirror cut to size for the back and the bottom, add a light in the inside shining down from the top, add glass shelves and you have a really cool bar. Put bottles on the bottom and clear wine glasses on the glass shelves. It will look really nice with the light on druning a party and would be nice in a living room.
gezz, I've been looking for something like this to put in my bathroom for a sub for a closet! Can I have it!
