Repurposed Wire Spool

Although using a wire spool as a table is not new... I tried to give it a new look at least.

I started with a small wire spool that was given a new wood plank top by my client before bringing it to me. So having a smooth top helped. Otherwise I would have sanded it smooth before beginning.

Since I planned on painting raw wood.. I added a little bit of water to my chalk style paint. (Retique It Alabaster)

I only painted the base since I had other plans for the top. Believe it or not I used a sponge to apply the paint in record time!

As for the top I used a Gray liquid wood by Retique It. It is a pretty light gray, but also stainable. I did use a brush this time, but again..a sponge would work.

On my second coat of liquid wood, I dragged a wood graining tool across to give the look of wood and texture.

Here's a close up of after..while drying. Unfortunately it was too close of a color to my base, so I came up with another idea.

I used a darker gray paint over it called Greystone, and while wet I used the wood grain tool again.

It was perfect! I applied a coat of sealer called Tripletique for protection against sweating glasses again with a sponge.

Here's how it came out. So easy but has so much character.

I can't wait to find more of these wire spools. I'd like to use them for my patio. When using outside make sure you use outdoor sealer like Polytique.

Love that dark gray. Very pretty.

So much of the material seems to be swapped out with new wood. We used a really large spool for our dining room using the original wood and simply staining it. We used another large one, cut the slats down and made a coffee table out of it. It's perfect for little ones to use to learn to walk--NO sharp edges!
