Bedroom Door Makeover and Hanging a Mirror in the Master

Hanging a bedroom door on our master and attaching a mirror. Well, its finally happened guys, for the first time EVER our master bedroom is getting a door! To be fair our bedroom is at the top of an L shaped, enclosed, staircase so its very private. Regardless though, not having a door, has made me really uncomfortable whenever we’ve had company – which I think is pretty fair lol. This was one of the many very old doors here that I either pulled out of the house during the renovation or found in an out building. The crystal knob on this one pegged it immediately as the door absolutely meant for the master.

Since 2015 this door has literally just been waiting for this moment.

Its not in the best shape obviously but I knew it could be fixed with a little love and a coat of shiny black Rustoleum paint.

First thing I did was attach the hinges and get it hung up because I’ve learned in the past that its a lot easier to work on a door when its already hung!

With the bedroom door up I got to work filling in and fixing all of the nicks, bumps and old screw holes with wood putty. I have no illusions that this door won’t keep many of its scars but making it “perfect” was certainly not my intent anyway.

After two coats of high gloss black Rustoleum I am totally in love with this old beauty.

Check out the picture of it at the top of the stairs! Doesn’t it just feel like its meant to be there?

I knew our bedroom door would be open the majority of the time so I had it hinge into the bedroom and not over into the closet. It will sit nicely, completely out of our way, beside the chimney and the dresser.

Yes, I considered hinging it into the stairwell but the stairwell is already pretty narrow…

As you guys know (and can see from the pics) furniture placement up here is a bit tricky because this isn’t a full second story but a half story. So, half of the walls are only five feet tall leaving me with the struggle of where to put everything.

Case and point: a stand up mirror that’s been floating around up here forever that I have NEVER once found a spot I liked for.

Our bedroom door was the answer!

I picked up these mirror hanger brackets on Amazon for very little and carefully added them to the “back” of the door.

Choosing which side to put the mirror on was something I really thought about actually. If I had placed it on the other side the mirror may have hit the chimney and the dresser when the door was fully opened and, considering that’s where its going to be the majority of the time, I couldn’t have that.

In this case it is a bit weird when the door is fully closed because walking up to the mirror in such a narrow stairwell is a little trippy lol but it is what it is.

The priority was that finally, now on the bedroom door, I have a mirror I can “swing” out and use anytime I need it and its no longer taking up any wall space besides.

Perfect solution!

Getting this space painted out and now a bedroom door added to it is such a relief!

Since I moved in in 2015 I’ve had the plan to get this done. It may have taken nearly seven years but our bedroom has gone from feeling unfinished to complete in just a few hours of work.

Moving on to the fun of redecorating!

Black door...perfect. Blends in with the stairs. Mirror on the door...great. Out of the way. Like it was meant to be. Great share
