Seeing a bunch of clutter and a dirty door was always an eye sore pulling into the garage until a quart of paint gave me something to smile about.

This was the black hole of my garage. It is the walk way to the cars and it was always piled with junk and the white door up close was always stained brown with dirt and gunk from kid's dirty hands. One day, I had enough...I needed a change. A quick change would be to add some color. I went to Lowes down the street to pick up a quart of paint. At checkout, I was expecting to pay $12 tops for a quart of paint for a cheap, and quick fix...turns out inflation has caused prices to skyrocket to a whooping $30 for a quart!!! That is insane!!

Luckily, I already had the paint supplies and only had to purchase the paint otherwise my "cheap" diy would have turned into a $75 project. I prepped the door by washing it with a soapy, damp rag and drying it. I taped off the door knob so I didn't have to remove it and propped it open with a shoe because it is a safety self closing door.

Note, do not use cheap dollar store rollers and paint brushes when painting - like I did here. I used a brush to outline the inside edges of the door.

I used a roller to paint the flat panels of the door. I had to do two coats because the cheap roller and brush make the finish uneven and blotchy. On the second coat I upgraded my roller to get a smooth finish.

I used Sherwin Williams Indigo Batik SW7602 in a satin finish.

We also hired a closet company to come in and add some cabinetry. The door now stands out from all the white and will hide all those dirty fingerprints.

I think that showing the 'after' photo with the cabinets, while listing the cost of the project as only $30 is somewhat deceiving.

It would have been more realistic to show only the door area with the painted blue door, since this amount covered only the cost of the paint.

I really like the color of the door and the idea of painting it a darker color. I'm so tired of looking at our dirty smudged doors as well. I'm considering going a darker shade in our front door but due to the fact it's in the sun 90% of the daytime it can't be a dark color like yours. I'm thinking a lighter green to match shutters! Thanks for sharing! Most important thanks for the inspiration! 😊🌟 -Allison
