We have a very narrow closet in our living room. It has a design and location that makes it very hard to find a proper way to hide all of the mess inside. It really doesn’t lend itself towards the use of a curtain and it is impossible to build a traditional closet door. When we remodeled our kitchen/living area, I remembered an old barn door that we had stored away and thought that it would be the perfect fit (well, almost)

Here is the space that is going to look so much better!

So, this is the door that we purchased about 30 years ago at an auction. It was used in our former house as decor in our large open living room. When we moved to our smaller house, it got put in the wood storage area until we had a place to use it.

Removing hardware!

It had great hardware, but it all had to be removed.

Don’t worry, I saved all of this for another project.

Tools used to remove hardware.

Welders gloves are great for projects like this.

The total space was only 4 feet wide. So we had to cut the door down to be able to slide the door and be able to get into the shelves.

We also had to cut the top and bottom to fit in the space. I just cleaned up the door and didn’t do anything else, except to white wash the edges, because I wanted it to stay natural and rustic.

Adding more character.

My husband used wood from our former dock and planed it down to go above the door. The original owners of the cabin used large cedar trees from the lot as the floats for the dock. When we rebuilt the dock, we took those old growth trees out and let them dry for a couple of years. A friend with a portable mill came out and we cut up all of the log and now are using it for our remodel projects.

This is what we used to seal the wood.

Wood in place!

This is the brand of the hardware we used.

All of the pieces. I just love the wheel!

The main rail was 5 ft. long so my husband cut it down to 4 ft. So that it would fix the space.

Rail is up waiting to hang the door. The instructions were very well laid out and easy to follow.

Tada!

I’m in love with this door! We found a simple pull to open the door and I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out.

I built a custom sized barn door for my bedroom. Used 3/4'' plywood, sanded down well. applied a primer coat then a coat of grey. Drew a large tree of life on one side and birds and flowers on the other side. Used a plastic edging material for the four edges and used brass tacks to secure it. Bought the hardware on sale. I love my door.

Love this! I've always liked the look of barn doors, but smaller like this is perfect for my laundry area. A small, walk-thru room with a door at each end and only room for the washer and dryer. Have always thought the doors were unnecessary and now I have a perfect solution!!
