Easy Beachy Burlap Valances

Love burlap? Find out how to make these easy-sew burlap valances with a beachy vibe. Get started on them now and have them ready in plenty of time for summer!
It all starts with a quick trip to the fabric store!
Jo-Ann Fabrics carries different colors of burlap in various weights/grades. Depending on your window size, you’ll need approximately 3 yds. of 48 inch wide burlap. To make five, 48-inch wide valances with a finished height of 12 inches, you'll need 24 inches per valance because you will be folding each valance in half to create the rod pockets (more on that below).
Fold in half to create a large, simple, open rod pocket spanning the entire height of the valance, sewing a ½-inch seam at the bottom of it. You can buy burlap with a ½-inch fringed selvage like this one that includes 2 rows of stitching to prevent fraying. Then use those as your finished edges on either end of the valance – no sewing required there.
Trim with whatever trim you like and sew on to bottom edge of valance. Alternatively, you could incorporate the edge of your trim into the bottom seam of the valance. Here, the bottom seam was pressed flat and then the trim was sewed onto the “wrong” side (meaning the side facing the window). Off-white cotton trim with a nautical feel was chosen for these valances, but other fun options would be tiny seashells or pom-pom trim in beachy colors.
Hang with a decorative curtain rod and enjoy! Beach, breezy, and oh-so easy...
