DIY window awnings

can i make the top or shade area of this awning out of wood and asphalt shingles, will be making a similar support bracket , needed for 2 windows , 7ft & 8 ft..will be adding a center support long ways if needed

    Yes. Make sure your supports are strong enough to support the weight of the wood and asphalt. It will be heavier then the aluminum.

    this is what i'm after, this type of bracket, but am afraid of weight...but how to apply shingles, don't want nails to go thru base and what can i use for base for less weight but exterior application....could i glue and staple , t

      Hope , how do you think awning fabric would work ?? ,would be lighter and have you ever painted/stenciled awning fabric.?? i have a rich tan that i think would look great with a black/red/white striping, similar to this but w/a touch of red

    Cedar shake can be glued with exterior glue - try attaching a lightweight metal base.

      no cedar. have shingles from roof job this summer and want wood brackets. aluminum not strong enough in denver windy falls

    The reason the picture shows awnings made out of metal is that they are light. To make the same awnings out of wood and asphalt shingles would be very heavy and require much more bracing.

    You will be replacing the supports, frame, and base for the shingles, so I think it’s doable as long as you have enough support.
