I initially affixed the drape rod to the wall with the little nails they include in the rod packet. Although the drapes in the living room are very light weight, I'm wondering if maybe I am using the ones design for cafe curtains. The little nails fell out of the holders and the drapes are miserably askew on the wall. Would screws be a better option for holding the rod in place?
If your installing the brackets close to the window trim longer nails would work. You need to penetrate the drywall and into the studs, about 1 1/4+. If your installing away from the window trim, screws with plastic anchors would work.

If there isn't a stud where you want to mount them, you can use drywall anchors, as well. Here's a sample:

Yes the basis that come in the packs are intended to nail into the wooden frame, their usually not long enough to penetrate the drywall. Immediately above and on either side of the casing (if standard size) should be framing to nail an inch and a half nail, out screws with anchors work well if the drapery isn't too heavy.
Thanks for your helpful input.
