How do I change kitchen garden window?

I love the garden window behind my kitchen sink, but it’s boring. I have put a few colored bottles and jars among the few plants there. I don’t have a green thumb at all. The window shelf is almost 30” deep and 5’ wide. Ceiling is at 14’ and I can’t reach it. Any suggestions to spice up this space? Thanks ☺️

  • Hi Jewell! Love reading your posts, always so thorough. You are so lucky to have such a lovely garden window! What do you collect that would take the sun and heat exposure? My tiny girlfriend has a window like that and she collects cookie jars and displays her "not worth anything, but are pretty" jars. She rearranges seasonally. Anything with color of varying heights, shapes and textures. A vase collection could be interesting. A friend of mine collects salt and pepper shakers, that would be pretty too, just use old thrift store books to add height. How about pretty decorative plates or glasses? Tea cups? Figurines?

    Hello jewel,

    have you tried succulents? You do not need a green thumb. Funny thing, I saw some in the store the othe day and there were little tags in them that read. “ I thrive on neglect”.

    Herbs are also super easy and you can eat them and fresh herbs taste much better and save you money. I just water once a week using my spray gun on the sink. I did something like you see in this photo. I would take a picture of mine but I am out of state right now.. Anyway, I get a lot of compliments on mine and I love to cook and love having spices right here but I did only one row of 3.

    its just a thought. Best of luck!!

      Thanks, Candice! I keep killing herbs, but a pot of small succulents is doing fine. I can’t reach the top of my window, but I think I could get a spring rod for one row of herbs, as you did. I’m getting excited, now. Thanks! ☺️

    If you don't have a green thumb, you have maybe a painters thumb?

    I would buy some window paint and make some random shapes with different colours on the window or something more elaborated : https://www.pinterest.fr/pin/377458012506699034/

    You don't have to do the whole hight of the window...

    Or hang some strings of coloured beads over your curtains ;

    Or simply cut out some "stripes" out of contact paper to simulate a window with little squares...

      I have never thought about painting on the windows in this space. Maybe I can do some of that. I love color! I’ll check out the websites. Thanks! ☺️

    I love the earlier suggestions of both the succulents and the herbs in the window. You could also intersperse some collectibles with them. You could build a stairstep type thing to put pots, etc. on. I wish I had a window like that in my kitchen, I hardly even have a window ledge at all. I do have a large window over the counter, that I keep my orchids and a couple of other plants on, it faces south and has a decent overhang so that they get the subdued light that they like year round. If you want something that gets a little height in the window, orchids are easy to care for and provide an interesting plant point where you put them. You can use interesting decorative pot for the outer pots to add some bright spots to go with your décor, also. Have fun decorating your window, Jewell!

      Thank you, Nancy. I will certainly post on Hometalk! I’m doing a series on Perk Ups for areas all over my house. Cheerio! ☺️
