What you decide to do with your windows can depend on how much light you want in your room. I vary mine with the seasons. I have blinds on all my windows but in the summer I tend to go with just valences or sheers on the sides so I can let all that sunshine in! In the winter I go with sheers in the middle and heavier panels on the sides that I can push back if it's a sunny day or close them at night when it's cold and dark! Your windows look so pretty that I think I would do a blinds and a valence! I pull my blinds up and down--they go up in the morning and down at night for privacy.

Wow, Gail, I agree. Your curtains certainly don't help with your decor. Personally, here is what I would do - change it up to fit your needs. I would put window sized sheers on tension rods inside the window casings. That way, you can get light in when you want it. Since you're in NY, I'm guessing you'll probably want a thermal type curtain to hang from those rods. I'd go with a grommet top so it's much easier to slide open and closed. There are plenty of economical lengths and patterns out there to choose from to customize your look. That way you can add dimension, accent and warmth to your room without very much fuss. Have a great day!

I personally think you can't go wrong with light colored solid curtains. I love a linen or white to help brighten up a space. Even when the curtains are closed the light color makes it seem brighter in the room. You can find lined/light blocking light colored curtains. Some really nice ones at costco right now if you happen to be a member!

    Hi, Gail,

I agree with lined draperies, given your location. Raise your rod height closer to the ceiling, rather than on your window frame, and increase width to 4" beyond either side of window for a more professional look. Keeping your draperies at floor length insures better insulation. Place them over a second rod with sheers, for sun's entry during daylight hours. Draperies are typically 2.5 to 3x the width of the window, plus returns, if you install traverse rods. Sheers can be 3x the rod's width.

    Good luck!

you might want to consider roman shades. They have the advantage of coming in many colors and fabrics that can compliment your room and provide privacy when lowered. I have light colored ones that lighten the room but provide privacy.

Use a soft color to make the room look bigger and to brighten it up. Go to a paint or hardware store and get their paint swatches that match your walls to help you find the color that will look the best.

I would make the rods wider to have the curtains hang better, if you want to keep the curtains. I live woven wood blinds, that you can get at Lowes and they will cut them to fit the windows. They are not very expensive and let in light when you want it.

Another option would be to buy thermal drapes and open them when you want light.

A third option is to buy blinds.
