Underberg Large Farm Gardens

Every second year in spring (around October) Underberg hosts the Open Gardens festival. I had the privilege of being in the area over this time to view these most magnificent gardens.
Underberg is little village located at the base of the Southern Drakensberg mountains in South Africa. It gets cold in winter with heavy frosts and very often snow. The summers are gorgeous and hot with regular afternoon thunder showers. I hope the gardens will inspire you as much as they inspired me.

wild horse painting, crafts, Wild horse Painting

Wild Horse Painting

I prefer painting big canvases. I did the background in a pale wash, and then used only a palette knife onto the canvas for the horses. I wanted to capture the freedom of horses, and using a palette knife forces the artist to be looser on the canvas. The entire painting is done in acrylic. My painting of horses is adapted from a photo of the wild horses which live and survive in the Namib desert of Africa (Namibia).

Rotational Veggie Planting Guide

A wonderful guide for practicing crop rotation in your vegetable garden. As you can only really grow one type of vegetable in one spot for a while before it depletes the soil of all the nutrients it needs.

keeping chickens for fresh eggs, homesteading, pets animals, Laying an egg

Keeping Chickens for Fresh Eggs

We are a family of 3, and basically you can count on about 2 chickens per person to keep the household having sufficient eggs. We decided to start with 4 chickens and see how we go. Our chickens came from a local egg producer. They are over a year old, apparently their egg laying starts diminishing, and egg producers, don't really like that. So from tiny little holed up cages, they got a wonderful large coop.

magical moringa tree, gardening, My baby Moringa tree

Magical Moringa Tree

A wonderfully nutritious tree with leaves that taste bit like baby spinach. They can be added fresh to salads or to soups etc. A tea can be made from drying and crushing the leaves, which can then be put in a coffee plunger to get a very nutritious tea. Leaves are full of vitamins and nutrients. A new must for the veggie garden.
