Update Cabinet Doors to Shaker Style for Cheap

Our big project for this year has been remodeling our kitchen cabinets. We wanted to update our kitchen cabinets but did not want to spend a lot of money because that's not in the budget. So how about we update our current cabinet doors with trim for less than $50... Here is the same cabinet door after add trim and painting. What do you think?
But before painting the doors looked like this. The first thing we did was removed all the old paint, this was because the previous paint job was not the greatest.
After weighting our options on the trim piece, we decided on a 1/4" MDF sheet, cut into 2" (for drawers) & 3" (for doors) strips.
We cut the the trim pieces to fit the door then added liquid nails and 5/8" finishing nail to hold the trim in place.

After adding the trim we filled in all the nail holes and gaps with wood filler then sanded smooth. Next we caulked all the inside edge of the trim where it meet the door. Now the door was ready for paint. Here is a sneak peak of our kitchen now...
It cost us less than $50 to create the shaker style door. FOR OUR KITCHEN it cost us about $120 to add the trim plus the paint. What do you think of our kitchen makeover? Make sure to check out our blog post for all the finer details.

What did you have to do to prep both the existing cabinet and the added trim boards to receive paint? Love the result!
Hi you have two costs in your post ($50 and $120). Can you clarify what each amount means and how many doors and drawers you were covering? What made you choose the MDF product and what were some of the other options? My cabinets are solid wood with a raised panel and rounded sides. I think the trim would work on the doors but not sure how to overcome the roundness of the cabinets themselves. I think adding trim to the cabinets might make them look too big/thick (if that makes sense). Any suggestions?
