This headboard sells for over $600 on Ballard Designs website, but we made one ourselves for only $75 in wood (and a little birdy!)

We started off with some boards that we glued and doweled together.

We decided that the horizontal boards alone seemed a bit flimsy. So we added boards going vertical on the other side, and reinforced all of it with some nails.

To get the image on the boards he printed out a copy of a picture I had of the original headboard...traced it and cut it out.

Then we used the old school projector I bought on e-bay to project the image and trace it out onto the wood...

Once the image was projected onto the wood we traced it out to the size we wanted.

Using a skill saw we cut out our design...

Once the design was cut, we went back and sanded down all of the edges so that it would be smooth.

Our little bird was getting rather impatient to take his perch, but there was still a bit more work to do!

I painted this piece using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in French Linen...

Then we added hooks to the back for hanging the headboard on the wall.

We used remnant wood pieces to construct our own finials...

The finials added a little character, and finally our little bird was in place!

And here is the headboard finished and in place. Not bad for under $100 and an afternoon's work!
