I started this makeover in September 2011 by painting our kitchen cabinets and adding new hardware. After living with the newly painted cabinets, I decided I wanted to get rid of the wallpaper, install a new backsplash and a ceramic tile counter top. I did the majority of the work. My husband helped with the heavy work, like hanging the beadboard. I was able to achieve the look I wanted for around $600.
My kitchen makeover. It was time to get rid of the 1980's kitchen.
The first thing I did was paint and distress the cabinets. They are quality cabinets so I didn't see the need to replace them. I did however, purchase new hardware.
After stripping wallpaper, we installed primed beadboard. A molding was added at the top. Since it was already primed it only required one coat of paint.
Tin ceiling tiles were used for the backsplash. They were so easy to work with. You cut them using tin snips and apply to wall with liquid nails.
It was time to get rid of the 80's green laminate. Did you know that you can tile over laminate? Well, you can. All you do is sand to rough up the surface. This allows the tile adhesive to adhere better to create a stronger bond.
Accessorizing was the fun part. I hung grapevine wreaths from the dollar store and made a simple burlap valance. My husband made the shelf and my daughter made the "Fresh Eggs" sign.
All that was left to do was to sit down with a cup of coffee and enjoy my bright new space.
