DIY Magnetic Spice Rack

I have been on a kitchen organizing kick lately ( you can find all of my kitchen organizing DIY projects HERE) and one of the goals has been to clear the clutter off my counter top. One of the things taking up room on my countertop was my spice racks.

Here is what I started with. I liked the spice tins. They fit exactly one jar of spice in them...so they're the perfect size. And the location was really handy for cooking. But besides taking up some room on the counter, they also made it hard to clean. I had seen magnetic spice racks in the store, and thought they would be a perfect solution. But they usually come with spice containers (which I didn't need) and cost about $35 for 12 jars...which adds up to more than $100 for my wall of spices. So I decided to make my own.

Start with some small magnets ($15 for 100). I used 2 per container. (I did start out using only 1 but that wasn't strong enough to hold some of the heavier spices in place on the wall.)

Glue the magnets onto the back of the spice jar.

Cut a sheet of galvanized steel sheet metal to the size you need.

Attach your sheet metal to the wall where you want your spices to go. Since I was putting mine over tile, I glued it on, but you could also use nails or screws to attach it.

Wait 24 hours for the glue to fully cure and then stick up your jars. And you're done!

Here's my countertop after the project...completely cleared off!

I saw a similar project on Hometalk some time ago & have been looking for just the right options for a while. Then I found spice tins through an email that I am signed up for. It had a set of 6 for $9.99. By the time I bought the magnets & tins to put them on, it was more expensive than the nice tins that i was looking for. So I bought the tins-2 sets. They have clear tops & I had been looking for stickers to use for labels when as I walked through the Dollar Store I saw some bottles of chalk board paint! Inspiration hit and I bought it, then just down the aisle, I found Gold & Silver paint pens! Perfect. I used sticky notes to cover half the clear top, & after 3 coats of the paint, it was fully covered. I wrote in silver paint pen the name of each spice. Underlining the black paint gave it a finished look and also around the edge of the window. This hid any imperfections in my painting job. Pictures prior to painting & completed project. I have them on my refrigerator door for now, but have a cookie sheet that I plan to hang on the side of my cabinets, where they will soon reside.

Thanks Wanda, I do like them. These have bot a sprinkle & a pour option as well as dipping with a measuring spoon. That is esp. handy. I purchased 2 art the dollar store. They were smaller & didn’t have the pour & sprinkle options either. But were great to learn how my idea worked!😃

I didn't want my spices taking up room in the pantry so I asked my husband to build me this spice rack. It works great because everything is in alphabetical order - so easy to find and so handy. We hung it on the wall.
