What to do when you can't afford the cost of new countertops and cabinets? A lot of elbow grease, a gallon of paint, and a new backsplash.
My canvas. These cabinets had already been re-surfaced, but were in bad need of some TLC.
This was the worst cabinet door. Cracked in two places :(
Off came the doors and down they went into the basement workshop. They got sanded down to wood, while the cabinets received a light sanding, two coats of chalk paint, a coat of paste wax, and finally a good buffing.
Luckily, chalk paint dries fast, so with the help of a fan this step went by pretty fast.
Buffing out the waxed doors.
Cabinets finished, and put back together with new hardware.
The finished kitchen. I spent the majority of $1,000.00 budget on the natural tumbled stone backsplash.
To me it is a brand new kitchen, one that I am hoping will last another 20 years.
Next on the home improvement hit-list is the pantry.
Enjoyed the project?
Suggested materials:
- Tumbled stone tile (Lowe's)
- Valspar Optimus paint (Ace Hardware)

Have a question about this project?
Did you spray the paint or roll?
Did you replace the hardware like pulls, hinges, knobs? I have antique brass hardware and would like to know if you can change the color or texture to look like crome or stainless:
