How to Glaze Cabinets

I wanted to update my cabinets a little. So I decided to glaze them. It was so easy. I used a dark gel stain and just wiped it on. Making sure to get in all the grooves. Then I waited a bit and wiped it off.
Glazing is a great simple way to update your cabinets
These are my cabinets before glazing.
Here are my cabinets after glazing.

Do you have any idea what to do with dark stained kitchen cabinets that not been stained very well to being with? Will a glaze help and if so, what color?

I would like to try the opposite for this glazing because I have the dark wood cabinets and am thinking of painting them white. So before actually painting if there was some way to make them lighter, I may change my mind about doing all the work of painting. Thanks.
