The Cutest Little Garden Themed Crate With a Top Secret Mission...

My front entry lacked an entry table.

Truth be told, there really wasn't much room for one because my bike is parked INSIDE my house, due to no room in the garage. (hoard much?)

Desiring a compact entry table of some kind, I rummaged through my crate stash and came across this old ammunition crate... with a bonus lid.

Hmm... how could I make this lidded crate work for my needs?

And that's when I came up with this idea that included decorating the crate inside AND out...

This crate definitely has something to hide, but it's the prettiest best kept secret of all!

Here's what I did:

The before

This beat up old crate was sitting in my stash, looking sad, needing some love.

It was the perfect size for what I had in mind... but could I pretty it up enough to make it work? I was about to find out...

Stencils used

Grabbing two garden-themed stencils, this little crate was about to get a whole new look inside AND out!

Painting the crate

The inside of the crate got a coat of Fusion's Bedford which is has a very slight green tint. It's a fresh look that is perfect for a garden theme!

Stenciling the images

Once the inside of the crate was dry, the Potting Shed stencil was placed inside the crate, then stenciled in various colors of black, copper, green and white.

How to stencil

The outside of the crate was painted in white to really freshen it up!

Then the Welcome To My Garden was positioned into place, then stenciled.

How to stencil

Stenciling is very easy! The key is to ensure your stencil brush feels dry before you start.

  1. load stencil brush with paint
  2. remove most paint onto a rag
  3. tap or swirl paint through the stencil for the desired effect

And here's the results!

Oh hello there Welcome to my Garden themed crate hanging on a wall. You sit there so summery and pretty and tidy-like!

But I know you are hiding a secret, working very hard at doing something special inside...

The inside of the crate became my little desk on a wall!

It's the perfect entry table that doesn't take up any space at all, yet is as cute as can be while decorating my entry in a fun garden-theme!

But the best part of all? When you're done jotting down your notes, close the lid and it becomes just art once again!

Now the bigger question is, how can I make this hiding trick work on my main office desk?!

Great idea, right?!

Just curious about the original use of this crate. There's one in mother's attic that is almost identical...doesn't have the leather handles, but other than that, it's a dead ringer. It has been around the house and under a bed or in the attic for over 62 years that I know of.
