Protecting Mulch Beds With a Stone Perimeter

Our newly mulched flower bed kept getting washed out during heavy summer rains, so we added a stone perimeter. Rocks are cheap and they'll protect whatever they're sitting on. Problem solved.
This is what we started with. We had just made a new flower bed around our mailbox and mulched it. During torrential rain, the water washes the mulch along the edge.
Missing mulch isn't normally too big of a problem, but it's rained 3-4 nights a week lately exposing the weed fabric and it looks unsightly.
To add insult to injury, the mulch leaves a trail down the sidewalk towards the low point drain on the street, which I need to clean up afterwards.
We previously added some river rocks along the edge of our upper flower beds to address the exact same issue. After almost two years of a stone border, the mulch rarely gets washed out and the rocks look great.
In these photos I've only placed down a couple handfuls of rocks I had lying around, but you can buy bags of river stones at large hardware stores very inexpensively. I try to use bigger stones sparingly and place them down randomly.
Smaller stones can be placed after the larger rocks are set and can fill in open gaps. You only need to cover a few inches of the flower bed edge to prevent washout.

  • Love this! Looks pretty too! And can be accomplished with any building product that coordinates with other landscaping on the property. Great job, thanks for sharing!

I've had the same issue. I'm using flat rock set on their edges but this looks much neater. Will definitely be using this idea.
