Alice in Wonderland Under The Stairs Play Space

This is a magical wonderland for kids under the stairs. It is amazing under standard lighting, black light and also in the dark. We began with an empty closet under the stairs. The ceiling at the back of the closet started at about 3' and slanted up to 9'. This allowed us to build an 8' mushroom house facade for the entrance to Alice's Wonderland.
The art was drawn on with washable markers.
We projected images onto the ceiling using a DIY projector made from transparencies and using a cell phone for lighting. Then outlined with washable markers.

The mushroom house facade was cut from a 4x8 sheet of particle board and attached to the side walls with floor supports and two supports on the back side.
The rabbit on the ceiling
Card images and the rabbit were painted on the ceiling. the clock has glitter paint on it to give the metallic shine illusion.
Mushrooms were drawn and painted as well as the tea party characters and a grassy knoll was painted.
The Mad Hatter tea party was drawn at table height and we made a drop down table using an old table, a piano hinge and a screw on leg. The flowers and a cobblestone path were painted and the wall texture made the cobblestones look very realistic.
The table extended gives the illusion of being at the tea party.
The rabbit hole was painted freehand on the back side of the door.
Giant singing flowers were added to the right wall. The Cheshire Cat was added over the door on the inside along with some silk trees that were added to each side and hang over the front of the house (check out the blog link for more pictures).
Completed inside view with play kitchen and cube organizer that acts like a bench. Alice is a Mural that was purchased online from Pixers.
The front facade has a 20" x 5 foot door. A smaller door was painted on the front of the actual door so it would be to a child's scale. The window was a thrift store mirror that we painted yellow.The signpost was created using a plaster candle stick and a closet pole with craft foam signs.
The handle was made with balsa wood, craft foam and a wooden knob painted with metallic gold paint.

While this is such a cute idea, you will have to consider changing it out for something else when all the "darkness comes to light". Soon.
