Dresser To Wine Bar Make Over

We all have that old dresser that is looking for a new lease on life? How about turning your old, drab dresser into a funky wine bar...
Well.. let me tell you..I feel I have waited forever for this project to be started and finished! I have wanted to create this wine rack since I received our free, yes free, bonus dresser from a sweet lady’s yard sale. She gave me this small 3 drawer dresser AND my recently refinished bedroom dresser for the price of one!
Before we begin I would love it if you came and checked out all of my other projects and this full post over on my website or maybe you just want to say hello! I would love that as well!!
I'm 1000% obsessed with it and think it adds so much character to our basement. It goes nicely with our paneled wall we created.
The project began a number of months ago in my Mom’s garage. The below image shows the small dresser and hutch that I began with..
The first step was to use paint stripper on the very top to remove any poly finishes and gunk. As always, I used Goof Off. I simply pasted it on with an old paint brush, and left it to work its magic for 10 minutes. I then used a paint scraper to remove all the lovely (nasty really) “gunk”.
Be prepared when using the stripper, this is nasty stuff. You can see how prepared I was from my fantastic modelling here.
Jason made 2 shelves to fit in the spaces where we took out the 2 drawers.

While Jason was making the shelves and wine rack fronts, I sanded and stained the top of the dresser. I then painted on the first coat of paint.
On the back of each MDF wine rack piece, Jason glued and nailed on a support brace. These braces were used to attach the MDF to the shelves of the dresser. (See image above)
Once the shelves and wine rack fronts were in we used wood filler to cover up any small gaps. It was now time for the final coat of paint!

I used a brush to get into all the corners and edges, and then a small foam roller over the flat surfaces. (Side note: I always try to use a foam roller to reduce the risk of brush marks)!

The whole thing took about two coats. I used this funky blue color from Sherwin Williams.
Check out how gorgeous the bar top on this is... I love how the Kona stain came out here and the grain is so prominent. I have used this stain on some of my previous projects so I knew I would love it.
Check out the gorgeous hardware I picked up from Home Depot!
And this picture again because I don't think it can be shown enough... I just love it.

The 1 bottle missing is Jason's doing... he had to open a bottle of red to celebrate the success of this project!!

Did you consider leaving all or some of the top shelves for wine glass holders? You know, the kind that bars use to side the wine glass stems along?

What a transformation from hutch to beautiful wine bar. A beautiful color chosen for this piece. Love the way you made racks to hold wine bottles. Keeping one drawer for napkins and bar accessories is a good idea. The only thing I probably would do is add a glass top to prevent ruining the top of your bar, if you haven't done so. A beautiful job done on this piece.
