I wanted my kitchen stool to POP, so my hubby would stop breaking his toes on it...
I have had this IKEA stool for years, and it used to be natural wood, but when my husband moved in with me 7 years ago, and I guess the time it takes for the eyes to notice the stool and then send the message 6ft 4 down to the toes is slower than the time it takes to kick it and break a toe... so, I painted it purple, in the hope that a bright colour would make the reaction time faster... no such luck... so then I looked online to find a pattern or something that would REALLY make it pop, and I came across this cool technique...
I started out with the purple stool, the paint has been chipped in places, but I didn't mind, since I like the way it gives it a worn look... but I gave it a good clean first.
I made stripes with painters tape...
...and picked out some acryllic paint in ombre colours...
I painted the stripes, with one of the colours...
When dry, I changed the position of the tape, and made these narrow pink stripes.
Now the fun starts!!! I placed a cake doily in the senter...
... and with a sponge I dabbed the darkest colour to cover all the holes, and the edge around the doily...
When finished I removed the doily, and finished the stool by dabbing the rest of the areas outside the doily area the dark purple...
And there you go! A result every guest to my house has scratched their heads to figure out how I did it... But I never tell... only you guys now know my secret... ;-)
