Cookie cutters aren't just for baking! By felting my old wool sweaters and using them as templates, I made some cute Christmas ornaments.
This project cost almost nothing for great results and I really enjoyed making them. I warn you, it is easy to get carried away and make loads of Christmas decorations.
You will need some old wool sweaters. Firstly you will need to felt them. Do this by putting the sweaters in a hotwash in the washing machine and then the dryer. (you've probably done it by accident at some point when you've shrunk a sweater in the wash).

I used this method when I made my lovely Mountain Pillows from old sweaters. click here to see them.
Use your Christmas cookie cutters as a template and draw round them.

If you don't have any Christmas cookie cutters don't worry. I have drawn round mine and you can print them out for free, and use them as a template. Just visit my blog (link at the end).
Cut out 2 shapes for each ornament.
Sitch both sides together using a blanket stitch. If you don't know how to blanket stitch it is very simple and there is a diagram on my blog (link at the end).

The beauty of felted wool is that it doesn't fray so no need for seams.

Leave a gap for stuffing.
Fill your ornament with stuffing and then blanket stitch to close.

To make your ornaments even more lovely, add some embellishments. For example, I put buttons on my gingerbread and snowman, bells on my trees and embroidered eyes on my moose.
I really enjoyed making these Christmas ornaments and will be making some more. I have a rather extensive cookie cutter collection !
One last tip, don't throw away all those little bits of felt from your sweater off cuts. I have another really good Christmas craft use for them. Making funky upcycled felt garlands. Click here to see my fabulous felt garlands
