How to Make a Built in Bed Using Stock Kitchen Cabinets

See how we took this small dormer space in the upstairs bedroom and made it super functional by adding a built-in bed with tons of storage. On top of that, we added texture, character, and coziness in this little nook with a rustic planked wall behind the bed and new lighting. To see all the details on how we built the bed and the after pictures, click here: http://www.simplicityinthesouth.com/2016/12/progress-with-the-dormer-bedroom-built-in-bed-using-stock-kitchen-cabinets.html

The dormer nook where the bed would be placed is approximately 10′ wide by 4′ deep.

We had enough room for an extra-long twin mattress and (2) 18" stock kitchen cabinets with drawers

Is it possible to do this with a free-standing queen captains bed? (Double rows of drawers on both sides). It would also have an adjustable bed on top. I was just going to use an old waterbed, but I was told I couldn't use the zero clearance adjustable bed with that.

  • Thanks so much! My youngest son recently took over his older brother’s room. It definitely makes it easier to keep clean (or at least keep the appearance of a clean room) with the trundle drawers under the bed. I’m sure your nieces and nephews would love a cozy nook like this!
