tobacco stakes are used in the fields when tobacco is cut during harvest. The large tobacco leaves are cut and pierced onto the stakes and hung to dry in barns....there are so few farmers who grow tobacco now that there are barns full of tobacco stakes... so we look for ways to create something with these farm supplies...

Hi Sherry, do you live where the tobacco is smoke cured in the barns? I'm in Northern Kentucky where we spear the tobacco stalks on the sticks before they are hung to dry. Then we take the dried tobacco out and strip the leaves off into different grades, for sale at market.

I've made some cutouts of the shape of Ky, scarecrows and snowmen and am looking forward to making a star.
