Farmhouse Home School Room Makeover

A friend of mine works so hard to home school her kids, but her life is very stressful. We wanted to turn her front room into a spot where she could have all her home school stuff, like a little classroom. We added a shiplap wall, shelves, and a custom size desk.

Here's the before. It was actually full of junk before but they cleared most of it out before we arrived.

To create a shiplap wall, we purchased a bunch of 1/4" underlayment which is super cheap, like $12 for a 8x4' board. Then they ripped it down for us to 6" strips. We marked the studs, made sure the first board was level, and then used a brad nailer to attach them to the wall. We created small gaps with nickels as spacers. Then we painted it several coats.

We created a giant desktop by purchasing 1x6 boards of pine and piecing them together for a more rustic random effect. We built a frame for it to sit on for support and then trimmed it out with a small piece of doorstop trim. Then we stained it and sealed it. We rested this on three small filing cabinets we bought used on Craigslist and spray painted black.

We used small pieces of pipe and pipe flange to make these industrial shelves. We stained the 2x8 boards the same color as the desktop.

Here's the after! This room came together so well and it's so gorgeous and functional. We added a custom sign we made which is 'study' in Italian. My friend used to live in Italy so it's special to her.

We added these little kitchen organizers from IKEA which I love for pretty much anything. Here they work great to put pens, pencils, markers, scissors, whatever! Then we found a cute industrial style folder holder so each of her three children can have their own spot for work.

We added a bunch of accessories from IKEA and other places and we are so happy with how it turned out. Now she has a place where her kids can work on school stuff and everyone wins!

I like your look even better than the inspiration! You said you got the chairs at Ikea, but I can’t find them on their site. Can you give me any info on them? Name?

This is so great! Professional, organized, thrifty, looks so inviting! I have one question..... Are there outlets for charging all the electronic gadgets? If there are, they are well hidden! Love it!
