How-to Create an Aroma Palette for Every Room in Your Home

Post Sponsored by Comet

Through personal experience we know that scents have the power to bring back fond and fun memories, which is why they can totally transform and lift a room’s mood. Aromas add a level of freshness and a new dimension to any environment. Make your home more welcoming by thinking about more than color and style when you create a newly designed space - include scents in your room design!

Before designing each room’s aroma palette you’ll want to start with a blank, clean canvas, so the scents are enhancing a room, not just covering up an odor. Having a clean palette is key to letting your selected aromas work their magic.
We’ve got tips for successfully introducing this under-appreciated element into your home. We’ll walk you through the process of creating aroma palettes for your bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. Perhaps the most important tip? Deep cleaning heavily trafficked or grime-prone areas first will give you a fresh, blank canvas for your aroma palettes.

Determine which rooms could benefit from new aroma palettes. We chose the bathroom (check out our DIY bathroom spa for under $50!), bedroom, living room and kitchen. These are heavily used in areas of the home that could use the atmospheric lift of a clean, floral or spicy scent. We’ll talk more below about the effects each scent creates in a room and how to pair scents for different purposes.
Deep clean the rooms with products that hold a longer-lasting clean, like Comet Powder, to create a blank canvas. This elementary step is crucial to make cleaning your first priority when creating aroma palettes.
Use your best judgement on what needs a fresh touch depending on your own spaces. Our deep-cleaning started in the bathroom and kitchen, followed by dusting the bedroom and living room surfaces.
Select your aroma palette scents based on the feel of each specific room. For example, use calming, sleep inducing scents in the bedroom. Here we used a vanilla candle. Other recommendations for a bedroom include eucalyptus mint scented candle, lavender, jasmine, sandalwood or chamomile.
In the bathroom we selected a clean linen reed diffuser to inspire a fresh, airy feeling. Avoid heavy, powerful perfume scents in the bathroom especially if it’s a small space. It will create an overwhelming scent that doesn’t compliment the room.
In the Kitchen we placed a mulling spice candle on the counter. Spices and savory scents match well with the vivaciousness of the kitchen, like cinnamon, clove, or cardamom.
Floral scents are great for opening up a room (like a flower fragrance “bouquet”, if you will) which make them ideal for common gathering areas of the lime, like the living room. We chose a peony candle and paired it with rose petal potpourri.

The choice of using candles, spices, herbs or essential oils is entirely up to you and what matches your personal style and preference. We recommend including up to two smell-good elements for a solid aroma palette that will profoundly fill a space. You don’t want to create an overwhelming array of scents by incorporating too much of a good thing, rather, you want to build a complimentary scent for each space in your home.

Aroma palettes are a great way to make your home more warm and inviting. And it’s a fun project that doesn’t take much time or effort!

I thought this was filled with awesome ideas.

Obviously, if you are a person affected by scents you wouldn't use this as an option in your home.

    Great information provided here!

  • FYI cleaners such as Comet have several harmful toxins some of which have been linked to cancer, so using it as a cleanser is defeating the purpose. Candles which are paraffin based, also have some dangerous emissions, some of which are carcinogenic. Vegetable based candles are safer.

So using candles as your source of pleasing aromas can in fact be hazardous to your health over the long term. If you are looking for a safe and pleasing aroma, stick to essential oils from a reputable company such as Young Living or doTerrra. There oils are 100% pure and don't contain the fillers that are often included from Health Food Stores. These pure oils are also less of a problem to those who are sensitive to strong smells.

For a natural and safer multi purpose cleaner, put the rind of several oranges in a glass container and completely cover with white vinegar. Leave for a minimum of 5 days, (to two weeks), then strain the liquid into a glass spray bottle. The essential oil comes out of the oranges and adds a pleasing smell to the vinegar which can used for most surfaces.
