Furniture With Words

I love a good makeover, and painted furniture is one of my favorite things. But sometimes you need a little something extra, or maybe you don't want to paint furniture, but still want to jazz it up a bit. This idea is great for both furniture types. It's scripture carved décor! I started out on this little stool I use at my computer desk.

Hiding God's word in my heart is something very important to me, I find scripture to be a constant source of inspiration and encouragement. Finding new ways to surround yourself with bible verses is a great way to constantly be learning and growing. Of course this idea could be used with fun sayings or even names. I chose to display a bible verse address that would motivate me every time I sat down to work.  But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded. 2 Chronicles 15:7

Start by printing off your selected verse in the appropriate size and font for the piece of furniture you will be decorating. Be sure to consider the intricacy and size of the font you select. Super thin and detailed font might be difficult to start with.Using trace paper placed under your computer printout, trace your verse, being sure to center it on whatever surface you will be carving. If you don't have trace paper you can coat the back of your paper with chalk and then trace over the words and it will leave a traced pattern for you.

Using a Dremel Rotary Tool go over your traced words. I used tip number 194 that came with my Dremel kit, there are engraving and other wood carving tips available. You will hold the Dremel like a pen, varying pressure and angle as you gently trace the pattern. I suggest practicing on a trash piece of wood to get the feel. Different woods will be different to work with, some wood grains are softer than others. You will often make more than one pass over an area to get it just right. I left the exposed wood raw because I enjoyed to contrast, you could paint or stain your freshly carved words if you chose! Try this on a stool, back of a chair, picture frame or wooden box for an extra special accent.

I have tons of other fun and easy DIY ideas on my big Hunt & Host, many with a side of spiritual inspiration. I would love for you to come over for a visit. You can see what I did with this little piece of chicken wire! Thanks for following along, I hope this project sparked some creativity in you and your home!
