Every year, hubby Greg and I do at least one bigger project around the house. Last year it was a much needed air conditioning unit. This year we decided it was time to upgrade our 80's powder room. I like to do things a little differently, so... Here's what we decided to do.
100+ Year Old Barn Wood
It started with a pile of 100+ year old barn wood. Sadly the barn was torn down to make room for a new development. Greg and I got permission to grab a few pieces before it was hauled away.
Old Barn Wood Door
One of the best salvaged pieces from the pile was this barn door. I loved that the hardware was still intact.
BEFORE - 80's Bathroom needs a DIY redo
Here is the powder room before we did anything. The counter top, sink, and faucet were things we wanted to change.
Barn Door soon to be Repurposed
This barn door looked like a great piece for the counter top! Greg sized it up and got to cutting. Keeping some hardware was a big must icon
Barn Door Repurposed to a Counter Top
Yup, it will fit in there pretty well. Greg took the hardware off temporarily so I could clean it and seal it.
Barn Wood Shelf for Bathroom Faucet
Because I choose a vessel sink and a vintage style tall faucet, Greg had to build a shelf. It hides some plumbing and also raises the faucet so it can clear the sink edge.
Storage Space added in the Cabinet
I'm all for extra storage. I asked Greg if he would build me a cubby in the cabinet and - he did!
Salvaged Hardware from Old Barn Door
I added a protective finish to the barn wood counter top and to the hardware piece.
Chicken Wire Toilet Paper Holder
A fun chicken wire toilet paper holder. I also painted the cabinet and the bathroom walls.
Installing a Vintage Hand Towel Holder
If you saw my vintage towel holder project on my BLOG, this is where it started.
Rustic Industrial Style Shelf
I found a perfect rustic industrial style little shelf for behind the toilet. We also added a new distressed looking mirror and a new light.
AFTER - DIY Small Bathroom Updo
Here is the finished powder room! I really like the way it came out.

I love the way this bathroom turned out, but...don't read this as criticism, would it be possible to put some sort of wood covering across the area where the toilet paper is...using hinges so it could be lifted up and lowered, thereby covering all those rolls of tp?
