DIY Nautical Beach Inspired Mailbox Makeover

I have been procrastinating on this project for over a year simply because I didn't know where to start. We live near the beach so we have sand instead of dirt and it can be hard to get some flowers to grow. That and with all the wildlife, what does grow tends to get eaten. And when we bought the house there were many other projects that took priority. Until this week!

I knew I wanted the mailbox to have a nautical theme and I finally settled on a design. And the best part? It cost me less than $5 since I had everything at home except the spray paint. Yay! You can get the full DIY over at CrazyDiyMom.com

Here she is. Sad, blah, boring black mailbox. We added the brick soon after we moved in, but then she just had to sit like that. Poor girl.

I gave her a complete coat of white spray paint. I used one for plastic since my box itself was plastic and not metal. Make sure you cover your flag so that it doesn't get painted!

Then draw or trace your image onto your wood. I am not at all good at freehand drawing so I printed off an image I liked and then threw it under my projector to get it to the size I wanted it. Did you know they make projectors that are perfect for crafters? You can get those details on my website.

Once you have your image cut out, give it a good sanding all over to remove the rough edges.

Time to paint. I just used some leftover white paint + primer I had sitting around. I gave it 2 thick coats of paint on each side and then applied a sealer over top to protect it all.

Next decide where you want your image to go and mark out the spots for the screws. We made our marks on the wood in pencil and then predrilled those holes to make attaching it to the post much easier.

I also had some rope leftover from another project so I just wrapped/tied some rope around it to give it a little bit more detail to it.

Then I settled on planting some pachysandra because it grows good out here, it spreads, it's green all year long and the deer will not eat it. Yay!
