Modern Coastal Boys Room Reveal!

Hi, sweet Friends! I’m excited to show you our Modern Coastal Boy’s Room Reveal, this room has been such a long time coming and if you’ve been following PAD for a while you know what a mess this space was before we started the makeover process. When we bought our home the walls were all some sort of crazy color and we thought we would have them painted fairly quickly but fast forward two years and we only managed to get one of the rooms painted. We have been working our way around our home going room to room painting and updating each space.
So after finding out that our son would be moving in with us, we realized we would have to make some changes to our original design plan which was to give him the smaller room and let the girls have the bigger room since they enjoy sharing a bed when we’re all together. This threw a small wrench in things because the smaller room was actually already completed with our son in mind and the decor was slightly more masculine. Once the news had time to set in I began to panic just a bit because the room was in no way prepared to be a boys bedroom, the walls were bright turquoise and the ceiling was purple. Which meant we had so much work to do before it would be ready and only a few weeks before the kids arrived.

This photo is from the original listing of our home and gives you an idea of what it looked like when we took possession. The shelf that was attached to the wall was actually a custom build that was installed when the house was built and taking it down wasn’t very easy. Once we had it removed we realized they had textured around the shelf instead of completing the entire wall before it was attached, which left a giant spot on the wall that was different from the surrounding area.

In this space, it was important that we keep things very minimal because let’s be honest, what sixteen-year-old boy cleans his room often and we wanted to make it easier on those rare occasions that he does. Since he would be moving from the far Pacific Northwest which couldn’t be more different from Oklahoma we wanted to give him a space that embodied his personality.
After texturing the spot we were able to move forward with painting the space and we chose Sherwin Williams Repose Gray. This color is my go to because it looks amazing in any space and has no blue undertones which allows it to blend well with many decor options and colors.

Since he would be moving from the far Pacific Northwest which couldn’t be more different from Oklahoma we wanted to give him a space that embodied his personality.
This move is huge when you consider the fact that at 16 years old all you really care about is driving and your friends. We knew this would not be an easy adjustment so we wanted to make him as comfortable as possible and give him a space that feels like home. With that in mind, we kept with our whole home color palette of grays, blues, and whites while creating a modern coastal vibe as well.
Our jumping off point for this space was this beautiful beach print, I mean what better way to make him feel at home than giving him a view of the beach! The frame is just a regular poster frame that we spray painted gold with metallic spray paint. This is my favorite way to add oversized art to any space without blowing the budget completely out of the water.
The nightstands were a bargain find at Homegoods and I love the way the metal top adds a dash of industrial flair while still blending well with the coastal theme. We went with white bed linens so we could easily throw them in the wash with a little bleach and have them come out good as new.
The bed itself was actually a chore to find but we are so glad we held out until we found the perfect one. The price was absolutely amazing for an upholstered bed and we would totally buy it again and again. The color is a dark gray and true to the listing.
We had a dresser but the style just didn’t mesh well with the vibe we were going for so we searched high and low for one in the right color and size to no avail.
The room is not huge by any means and with a queen size bed taking up most of the room that meant we had even less room for a dresser. After some back and forth we decided on a slim console table under the tv and placed the dresser inside the closet so it could still be useful but also out of sight.
Plants and greenery are usually the one thing that I won’t skimp on in any space but when said space belongs to a child the thought of sending a few green beauties to their grave was just too much for me so I searched for some modern faux plants that would stay alive but also look amazing in the space.
The large modern plant stand full of succulents is by far my favorite of the bunch and when we get ready to change things up a bit it will look stunning on our built-ins.
One of the must have items on his list was his beloved surfboard, he was not able to bring it with him right now so we are going to have it shipped and our plan is to eventually buy a larger tv then place the surfboard over the tv.
No,  it isn’t the ideal decor piece for most homes you see online but guess what, he loves it and surfing has been such a huge part of his life back home and it is very important that we are able to include things he loves.

Since the moment I saw these pillows I have been keeping my eye out for the perfect place for these gorgeous beauties and when we decided on a coastal vibe they were the first thing that popped into my head. I absolutely love the colors and they are such a beautiful addition to the space. Plus they look fantastic on our new sofa which makes them a great investment since we can easily use them in another space to change things up a bit.

The quality is wonderful and they will stand up to anything a 16 yr old can throw at them. One thing that surprised me is how well he liked them, most men typically don’t care for pillows other than the one they lay their head on at night but these were a total hit with everyone. We have a few little DIY projects planned that will add a little something extra to this space and a gorgeous rug that is currently on back order that will bring everything together but for the moment this room is perfect for our son and will be a great starting point for this new chapter in his life.

Overall we are really happy with the way this room turned out and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for our son. This is something we have dreamed of for some time and we are so excited it is actually happening. We are also over the moon that we have one more room knocked off of our list of things to do and the fact that we are well one our way to a home that is totally us and a home that embodies each of our personalities.

Beautiful, but I don’t think it’s what a boy would want Maybe it’s just me?

Our son is nearly grown and grew up on the coast so this is right up his alley. We have since added a gallery wall and large pray for surf banner which he loves. Guess it just depends on the boy and the age of course. Thanks for the feedback Carol!
