Turn a Ho-hum Mirror Into a Smash Junk Hit With Scrap Wood!

I've had this tall skinny mirror in my bedroom for... oh... 10 years or so?

But I've never loved it. In fact, I was about to send it to the nearest thrift store in trade of a nice trendy upgrade, when I started browsing online for ideas.

Well, that sealed that deal. Everything I loved involved rustic wood. I could do that!

So I gathered up some scrap wood and made this instead.

The end result is a mirror I finally LOVE, barely costing me anything at all!

I really should have named this post, "Why it took me 10 years to fall in love with the same mirror..." because I am smitten with this end result! It's quirky, goes well my barn door headboard, and... well, it's pretty one-of-a-kind if I do say so myself.

Do you have a mirror this idea would work on?

Here's how I did it...
Anyone else have one of these el cheapo tall skinny mirrors?

Get ready to lose this look. Scrap wood was cut to desired size to frame the mirror.

Tip: the top and bottom 'hug' the mirror to hold it in place, while the sides overlap the mirror to hide the frame.
The frame was attached in the four corners with screws exposed.

The mirror was then placed inside the frame. Support boards were added in a cross cross fashion across the back of the mirror for stabilization.

Full tutorial details are in the original blog post link below.

While the scrap wood was cool, I desired to add a splash of 'old sign' into the mix.
This Antiques stencil HERE was painted in black, then sealed to protect both sign and chippy barn wood.

Tip: The sealer really brought out the depth of the wood too! So fab!
The result? One super quirky mirror with a ton of Antiques scrap wood personality!

I finally LOVE that boring mirror and would never part with it now.

Tip: Add coat hooks to revamp it into a hall tree style!
What's this? Looks like I've put on a little weight.

Testimony that the mirror works a little TOO well...

Loved your inspiration so I made one for my entryway and a bench below it. Now I can decorate it for the different seasons. I have received many compliments. Thank you for the idea!!!
