How to easily make this beautiful Stars and Strips wood stained patriotic door decoration.
Check out this short how-to video which shows step by step instructions on how to make these wood stained decorations. The video even shows how to get clean crisp no bleed lines with wood stain.
We started by printing or cutting out star shapes. We used a silhouette cameo vinyl cutting machine. If you do not have one self adhesive vinyl can be cut by hand or star stickers are available on amazon.
Cut out the large start shapes with a jig saw. We used standard 1 inch pine. The wood should be sanded smooth to at least a 220 grit. The apply the star stickers. These stickers will block the stain. Basically we are going to stain the background dark leaving the stars light.
The trick is to use Gel Stain available at most hardware stores. We got minwax Gel stain from Ace hardware. Then dab it onto the wood. Do not wipe it on or wipe it off.
Once the entire star is stained remove the star stickers carefully. We then applied a lighter regular stain over the entire star. Even though this stain was not get we still dab it and did not wipe it off.
For the strips we cut the desired shape out of pine and used painters tape to create four stripes. Then followed the same staining procedure listed above.
The last step after allowing the stain to dry overnight was to coat the decoration with clear polyurethane spray.
