I love to update our home decor to reflect the different seasons and the Summer is one of my favourites.

I like to incorporate a bit of a coastal feel which I generally do by adding touches of blues and whites plus a lot of shells.
This year I managed to find a big bag of mixed shells at our local thrift shop going for a few cents.

I used most of them to dress up candle displays but I also wanted something for the wall to so I came up with this simple little idea.

The pin board was also a thrift shop find and the rest of the bits I had at home anyway.

So although I have added $5 as the project cost it was actually only $2.50.
Firstly, I gathered my materials;
  • Pin board
  • Shells
  • Mini wreaths (you can find the amazon link over on the blog - scroll to bottom for link)
  • Faux suede thong
  • White spray paint
  • Hot glue gun or extra strong glue dots
  • Natural looking material or card (I used a piece of old roller blind but burlap would also work well)
  • Pins (with large head)
Next, I lightly sanded and sprayed the pin board frame with the white paint.
Then I sprayed the mini wreaths.
Once the mini wreaths were dry I hung them on the pieces of faux suede thong and used glue dots to stick on the shells.

(if you are using glue dots make sure you use the extra strong ones otherwise the shells will drop off within a few hours).

I then used a piece of the old roller blind to cover the cork on the pin board.

(this was left over from a photo image transfer wall art project that I did a while back which you can find this over on the blog in the DIY & Craft section - scroll to bottom of post for blog link)

I just cut it slightly larger than the frame and tucked it in.

And finally, I pushed the pins into the top of the pin board and added the seashells.
And this is how it turned out! I was quite pleased with the end results but I have been umming and ahhing as to whether to take it a step further and and some beachyfied (is that a word) stencilled writing on.

What do you think?

Those are so cute! I have so many shells and some vine wreaths, I'm going to make one to hang in the bathroom window. It will look great along with all the other coastal things I've made lately for that room!

    Thanks for sharing your idea!
