Learn how to make your own whimsical and fun DIY mermaid soap! Featuring shimmering mermaid tails and blue ocean waters, this soapmaking project makes a delightful weekend project you can create with the kids!

If you'd like more photos showing the process I used to make my DIY mermaid soap and extra tips, be sure to check out the original mermaid soap tutorial on Soap Deli News blog here.
You'll begin this project my making your mermaid tails! To do this, you'll be using clear melt and pour soap. Cut enough clear melt and pour soap into chunks to fill the number of mermaid tail silicone molds you have. Then melt the soap in the microwave.
Now stir in a soap colorant of your choice, to suite. Once mixed, pour your soap into the mermaid tail molds. Then spritz the tops of the soap with rubbing alcohol to remove any air bubbles.
Once your mermaid tail soaps have hardened, remove them from the molds. Then paint the tails using a small craft brush and a combination of mica powder and rubbing alcohol.
Once you've created your mermaid tail soaps, you are now ready to create the ocean soap for them to "swim" in! You'll use a loaf mold for this step.

You'll begin by making the ocean floor.

Cut enough clear suspension melt and pour soap into chunks to fill the bottom 1/4th of your loaf mold. Melt the soap in the microwave then add a brown soap colorant to suit.

You can also add fragrance as desired along with exfoliants for "sand." I used flax seed powder and corn silk powder.
Pour the soap into your loaf mold. (If you aren't using a silicone loaf mold, then you will need to line your mold in order to be able to get the soap out.)

Allow to cool slightly, then melt a small amount of white melt and pour soap base into the mold onto the top of the brown soap you poured previously. Swirl gently with a utensil, then spritz the top with rubbing alcohol to remove any air bubbles.

Allow the soap to cool and harden completely.

While the brown soap base is hardening, mix three more containers of soap. Melt clear melt and pour soap into two containers. Add different colors of blue soap colorant, mica and/or glitters to these containers.

In a third container melt white and pour soap.

Scent if desired with a skin safe fragrance oil.
Once the brown soap base has hardened in your mold, spritz with rubbing alcohol. Then pour and layer the three different colors of soap at slightly different temperatures on top of the hardened brown soap.

Once the second layer sets up, repeat the process with an additional third layer, spritzing each hardened layer with rubbing alcohol prior to adding a new layer.
Finally, pour a fourth layer of melted white soap base on top of the third layer and swirl gently into the previous layer just prior to it fully hardening. Then spritz the final layer with rubbing alcohol.
Your ocean soap loaf will look similar to this bar when cut.
Here’s a great video tutorial from Soap Fantasy that shows you how to create your own ocean swirl soap. I didn’t follow the tutorial exactly but it gives you the information you need to create your own custom ocean soap for your mermaids to swim in!
Now whip up a batch of your favorite soap frosting. You can find lots of great recipes via a google search for this step.

Once you've created your soap frosting, spoon or pipe the frosting onto the ocean soap. Then arrange your mermaid tail soaps and any other soap embeds into the soap frosting.
Finally, remove the soap loaf from the mold and cut the loaf into individual soap bars.
If desired, you can drizzle some cooling clear melt and pour soap on top of the tails to mimic water dripping.
Alternately, you can skip the soap frosting step entirely and arrange your mermaid tail soaps directly into the ocean soap. Simply place them in the fourth layer of soap once it starts to cool but before it hardens completely.

I figured out that Clear Melt and White Melt and several terms you use are names of specific products through a certain company. I love the alcohol spritz tip, and the dripping water tip. You provided a couple of good videos, too. Do you think first time soap makers could do this, or do you think it takes some experience and finesse to make the mermaid soap? And is it really just decorative, not for actual use? Best wishes 😇

Won’t the paint come off on your hands when you wag with the soap??
