Upcycled Record Into an Office Organizer!

A few weeks back I showed you how to turn an old record into an adorable bird feeder and this week it's something new.

With the kids going back to school, I've been going through our "office" - you know, the area where you toss pens, pencils, glue, scissors, etc. I have a dedicated office in our home, but with 3 crafty kids, nothing ever seems to find it's home after it's been used.

So I'm hoping this DIY will help a little bit because it's so cute! You can get the full DIY over at CrazyDiyMom.com.
You will need a metal bowl and a record for this craft. We used our oven to soften our records, but if you don't want to, you can also use boiling water to soften the edges. It takes a little more patience to make a bowl like this with boiling water, but it's possible.
I wanted my records to be a little cuter, so I painted them first with some acrylic paints. You can also paint them after your bowl has been molded, but I found it much easier to paint them when they were flat. As you can see, we made quite a few organizers with our records and gave them as gifts for teacher appreciation week!
Heat your oven to the low setting - mine was 200*F. Set your bowl in the oven upside down and place a record on top with the PAINTED SIDE UP (this record was one we didn't paint). Depending on the heat of your oven it will take about 2-5 minutes for your record to soften. You can tell when it's done, when the sides of the record have flopped down along the side of the bowl.
Carefully remove your record and bowl with hot pads and set them on your stove or on top of another oven mit. Working quickly, place your record into your bowl and mold it into a shape similar to the picture above. You can make smaller or larger openings, depending on what you want it to hold. Your record will cool down pretty quickly. Continue molding it or holding it in place until your record has cooled.

If you are not happy with how it turned out, stick it back in the oven and start over. I believe it took me about 3 tries to get my first bowl right. Once you work with it, it will become more familiar and be much easier to do.
When it's cooled down, I added a coat of an acrylic spray sealer to help protect the paint job a bit more. Then add in your office supplies!
Don't they look adorable?! We gave one to the music teacher (because it was a record) and one to the art teacher (obviously) and they loved them. What a great way to store and easily find all your pens, pencils, highlighters, scissors, etc!
