Our "Collected Coastal Farmhouse" Master Bedroom Makeover!

Hi, I'm excited to share our master bedroom makeover with you guys! We moved into our home, our 1895 Victorian farmhouse, around 2 years ago, and the master was (of course!) the last room we touched, so it had become the "catch all" space for leftover furniture and decor- no style whatsoever! But it had some nice elements- shiplap walls, hardwood floors, high ceilings, thick moldings, and a fireplace.
I wanted to update it to reflect a subtle coastal style that we love, but to definitely be respectful of the style of the home.
Here's the pitiful before picture. We actually kept most of the large elements (bed, end table, rug, and the chest you see in the side of the pic) and tried to do a lot with paint and accessories).
This is the room now- a balance of pink, aqua, and white, with some wood tones to ground it.
One of the first things we did was figure out the design of the room around two different elements: the artwork we had collected throughout the years and the bedding that I had found that I really loved. The large scale artwork that is hanging above both nightstands is pretty kitschy for some folks, I know, but my boys brought those home for me and I love them! I wanted them to be the stars of the room. They are the first things that you see when you walk in.
The smaller artwork on the nightstand is from Jenny's Print Shop. Her prints are super affordable, and you can make them work for both small and large scale art. I love to layer, so I used this artwork on this nightstand with a few other objects to give this side of the bed some dimension.
This nightstand, the Emily from Joss and Main, was one of the few big purchases for the room. The lines of it mirror the bed, and it gives me a little more display room for one of my favorite things- my design books (I have many!)
I used the weight of the lamps on each table to balance the length of the large scale artwork above.
The bed is one of my favorite things in the room. It's an antique that I inherited from my grandparents, and was the bed that I slept in when I visited them when I was a little girl. The bedding is from Ikea. It's a reversible duvet- one side buffalo check, one side wide stripes, which is a classic coastal design element. I layered an antique aqua and white quilt at the foot of the bed, some simple pink and white sheets, and a large decorative pillow from Pillow Time Girls (Etsy).
The fireplace received quite a makeover! We used pure tung oil to condition the wood, which was extremely dry and cracked. The tung oil darkened the wood and brought out a lot of the grain. We also tiled right over the existing tile (which was not original) with beautiful marble hex tile. Yup, those boots are total props to hide the gas fixtures, which I can't stand looking at :-)
I love how the finishes in the room came together- the marble tile, the wood mantel, the pink trim, and the dark tray doors.
A couple of super easy projects that made a huge difference in the room were painting the ceiling and updating the fan. The ceiling received a coat of this dark gray color, which I love because it reminds me of a stormy ocean sky (and actually, it's called "Ocean Storm" by Valspar). I was so glad we were able to update the fan, because I was not looking forward to changing it out- those 12 foot ceilings! Besides, it worked great, it just looked outdated! The rocking chair is another inherited piece. The dresser we painted, and added leather pulls to coordinated with the leather strap shelves that hang above (more on that coming!)
So I had been planning to do art ledges on the wall opposite the bed, but then we found some old wood boards in an old smokehouse on our property, and I just didn't have the heart to cut them down. We decided to make these shelves instead using leather straps.
I like how the leather kind of fits in with the whole "collected" feel of the room.
Most of the objects on the shelves are thrifted, inherited, or artwork we've picked up that we really love. I know these shelves are a little busy, but we love having a place in our room to display things that are meaningful to us! You can find the tutorial for this project here.
