Refinishing Chairs to Match That New Cool Dark Pottery Barn Table.

We just love our new Pottery Barn Benchwright table, but our budget didn't allow for new chairs. However, 'Craig' had 6 oak mission chairs on his local 'List'.
The chairs were a medium light color.
We decided to cut off the arches on half the chairs to get a mix n match look.
All paint and lacquer were applied from Home Depot rattle cans.
To get this look:
Lightly sand all surfaces.
Spray good quality flat black paint.(Allow to dry 24 hours)
Sand edges to create the aged/worn look.
Wipe on and then off, dark brown stain.(Allow to dry 24 hours)
Spray Clear Satin lacquer. One coat, then second coat after 30 minutes.

I really like the idea of using the brown stain over the black paint. Going to try it on my next project. Thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks Carol. The brown stain over the flat black paint really warmed up the look and feel and was a pleasant surprise as I experimented. In person they really do look like very old chairs.
