My husband wanted, well actually NEEDED, a space for his gun stuff. He had a gun safe but it wasn't enough to store everything. I really didn't want that gun safe or the rest of the related gun stuff in our bedroom, or living room, or well anywhere out in the open. And he didn't like it stuck in various closets or under the bed. Luckily there was a solution!
This house had TWO short stairways that went down to our bedroom. One went to the left and one went to the right but they both ended in our bedroom. So who really needs two stairways going to the same place?!
So we sealed off the opening at the top of the stairs.
And then ripped out the stairs.
And luckily we had more of the flooring to finish where the stairs had been.
Then the walls were painted and a light was wired in. A wood frame shelving unit was built to fit around the gun safe.
What had been an unnecessary extra stairway now has become a very functional storage space. He can now easily locate his gun stuff without having to rummage around in totes under the bed or in the closet. The doorway to this storage space is in our bedroom so the next project will be to add a hidden door bookshelf. Ahh, more storage space on the bookshelf part, I love it!
