Every good room makeover needs a before, right? Well this is the before in our case. Recently our last baby bird left the nest, so we are officially empty nesters. Which meant I could move our small guest room and turn it into a proper guest room
Let me preface this by saying this is the 6th makeover this room has had. Yes, sixth. When we first moved in, we gave it an update. Then as our older daughter grew up a bit, we transitioned over to a teenager room versus a 9 year olds tastes. When she moved out, I gave the room a small makeover and turned it into my Etsy studio. Then when we closed the shop, I turned it into a blog office. And last time it was transitioned from my blog office to a bedroom for the youngest who had outgrown her tiny bedroom. So let’s get to makeover number 6 (and hopefully the last one in a long, long time.)
I started out by changing the paint. Because if you want to do a room makeover on a budget – paint is your best friend. For this project we chose KILZ® Complete Coat™ Paint Interior/Exterior.
I started out by sampling a few different colors – and chose the third one down named Boardwalk.
I was a bit worried about painting over the black wall because it can be a bit tricky to cover such a dark color with a lighter shade. But the Kilz Complete coat  covered it like a champ. It only took 2 coats on the walls for complete coverage.  Because it covered so well, it took less than a gallon of grey to do the whole room and less than a quart of white to do all the windows, trim & doors. At under $30 a gallon at Walmart, it’s cheap and easy to find – and honestly it gives the more expensive paint I’ve used in the past a run for the money (at less than half the price!) Wanna see the after...?
The room seems so much larger with the black wall gone!
The best part is: I already had all of the larger pieces. Most of the bits and pieces for the modern farmhouse bedroom makeover was purely paint & accessories. Which meant the whole shebang came in under $500!
Now that it’s done my girls are joking about moving back in. Well at least I hope they’re joking… because this modern farmhouse bedroom makeover  is being put to good use soon for friends coming in to spend some time here at the cottage.
