My favourite DIY's are always easy to make, with simple materials, to last for years. These mini stocking tree ornaments are definitely one of those projects! They are also totally sentimental as they're made from a pair of my little one's socks as a memento from her first Christmas.

These cozy wool socks kept her warm this fall and are now hanging on the tree to celebrate baby's first Christmas! I just know I'll love hanging these up each year and remembering just how tiny she was.

Find Favourite Socks!
BEFORE - Choose a favourite pair of baby's first socks! Try to pick a pair that will likely coordinate with future Christmas decorations. Think about the colours that you usually decorate with and choose socks to match. We usually have neutral nature-inspired decor with little hints of red here at our house.

When my mom offered to knit a pair of baby socks for my little one, I knew that little baby lumberjack socks would be perfect! We had fun picking out the yarn and made sure to choose a red that was Christmas-ey. They were cozy for the little one this fall and now they're adorable at Christmas! icon
Making Baby Socks
You could assemble tree ornaments with any baby socks, but for extra sentimental value, the socks can be made by a loved one. These socks were hand knitted by Grandma (with lots of love!). The yarn details and link to the free pattern are available in the original post on my blog.

Since they only fit for a few months, repurposing them as tree ornaments is a great way to make sure all that work gets properly appreciated! If you're making DIY socks for this purpose, these ornaments will definitely take longer than the few minutes to tie on the loop....but will be SO cute!

If you're making socks that will be used later as tree ornaments, try to picture what a full-size stocking of the same type would look like. If your baby sock looks like a mini Christmas stocking, you're good to go!
Pick Socks Baby Actually Wears!
I picked socks that my little one could actually wear during her first Christmas. That way these mini stocking tree ornaments are not only cute, they're also sentimental!
Find Matching yarn or Ribbon
Once baby grows out of the favourite socks, or after baby's first Christmas/winter, repurpose the socks into baby stocking ornaments. Find yarn or pretty fabric ribbon that matches the baby stockings. Try to choose something that will last for years.
Thread Loop
Use an embroidery needle to thread the matching string through the back of each stocking.
Tie Loops
Tie each loop with a double knot. Tuck the knot down into the back of each stocking so it doesn't show. Extra points if you use the embroidery needle to sew in the ends!...which I definitely did not do icon
Finished Stocking Tree Ornaments
Hang the adorable mini stocking ornaments on the tree! Merry Christmas icon icon
