Discover the easy steps to turn empty popcorn tins into useful storage containers with several compartments! I use this technique to keep my accessories and tools in one place where they are easy to access. You can use the finished tins at home to keep all sorts of items neatly stored away and ready to use whenever you need them. This is a very simple DIY project that anyone can complete successfully with no fuss.

Tools and Materials

  • An empty popcorn tin
  • Piece of cardboard
  • Tape measure
  • Marker
  • Utility knife

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

A good, empty popcorn tin is the starting point for this project. You will also want a fairly sturdy piece of cardboard that is as tall as the tin. It is best if the cardboard isn’t too small, as you will be cutting it to size later on anyway. Apart from that, all you need are a tape measure, a marker, and a utility knife or something else you can cut the cardboard with. With these materials gathered together, you are ready to start.

Step 2: Measure Your Tin

I checked the diameter of the popcorn tin by measuring from one side of the opening across to the other. This let me see exactly how big I needed the piece of cardboard to be so that it would fit inside neatly. I then marked the same distance on the piece of cardboard, drawing a vertical line to show the part that is needed and the part to discard. You could also check the height at this point, to see how tall you need the cardboard to be.

Step 3: Cut the Cardboard to Size

Carrying out the previous step means that you will know where to cut so the cardboard will fit in perfectly to the tin. The next step was to cut down the length of the vertical line drawn in the last step. I now had a piece of cardboard that fit perfectly inside the popcorn tin. The other piece I stored for a later project. I cut the cardboard into two pieces of the same height. Then I marked a line half-way down the center of one of them, before cutting it, to leave me with a slit down the center.

Step 4: Insert the Cardboard into Your Tin

I could now put the two pieces of cardboard together by slotting one into the slit that I cut earlier in the other one. I then fitted them together so that they were snug and left four equal spaces. You might need to move them about a bit to get them fitted in exactly as you want them to be. It was then a question of simply putting the things I wanted to store into each of the different compartments.

This easy DIY project will give you a great place to store objects very neatly. No matter what you want to keep tidy and well-organized, this is an ideal solution. Best of all, it will only take you a few moments and a few materials to carry it out. Don’t leave those empty popcorn tins lying around when you can make great use of them like this.
