My adorable grandson just turned two in December and is in love with Mickey Mouse. So, of course, Nana indulges his obsession. For his birthday, we redecorated his entire bedroom with Mickey inspired bed, chest, toy box, you get the picture. I couldn't find a lamp or nightlight that we liked though, so....
I thought I'd just make one šŸ˜Š
I have had this kit in the back of a closet for a while now because I've never made a lamp before and I was a little intimidated. When I bought it at a thrift shop for $2, it looked easy and was too good a deal to pass up so I had to buy it. I got it home though, started looking at all the pieces and put them right back in the box lol.

However, grandson in need tops insecurities every time so I decided to give it a try. It really wasn't that as bad as I thought it would be.
First I laid out all the wood pieces of the base and spray painted them red. They were pre-cut so that was really easy.
Then I made a stencil of Mickey Mouse head using on a piece of a milk jug I washed and cut out. I used the caps of my and the children's vitamins bottles for the head and ears. I was inspired by another hometalker to use a milk jug for the stencil. Trace with sharpie and cut it out with an exacto knife. I wish I could remember her name to give her credit, and if she's reading this, thanks! It worked!
While the paint dried on the base pieces, I taped the stencil to lamp shades and painted a Mickey Mouse head on the shade.
But I felt like the base pieces looked too plain. I had some round sponge thingies I've been dying to try called Spouncers. I used a 3/4 inch to make the head and a 1/2 inch for the ears.
You have use a "dry brush "technique. In other words, dip the sponge in the paint and then sqeeze most of the paint back out onto the pallet. If you don't, you get a blurry mess.

So after stamping several Mickey Mouse head on the base , I let it all dry overnight. I didn't get pictures of the actual assembly of the lamp, but if you purchase a kit at a craft store, the instructions are pretty easy to follow.
Here's what it looks all put together. I gave it to him at the Christmas party and he loved it! Don't be afraid to try out something new this year šŸ˜€ Happy New Year everyone!

I don't get mickey I don't like mickey,so that's the answer to who doesn't like mickey. With that said I think it absolutely wonderful that you would do this for your grandson that loves mickey because I know a lot of people, adults that are still in love with mickey that would love to pass it on. So great job.

Well since people do love mickey I took it as a question and as for the brush technic it's just sponge painting from the 80'same so no that didn't come across as a new technology, sorry if I misunderstood the purpose of your post. But I did compliment you on the love you have for him.
