I wanted an unexpected piece of rustic and stylish storage space. I decided to make a hanging rope shelf for above my toilet. I Grabbed a circular saw, a drill, some scrap boards, natural jute rope, and just a few other items you'll see below. I'll give you step by step on how to make your very own rope shelf. Its fun and super stylish.
Supplies:
20” wood
2 50” rope pieces 3/8"
Hex Nut 1/4"
Knob (anything you like)
Router (for key Hole)
2” thick wood square (5 ½ x 5 ½ inches)
3/4” hole saw
Drill
Pliers
Pen or Pencil
Washers
Scissor
Saw
Stain
Tape Measure
Key Hole Bit

First, I gathered all my materials and cut my boards. You will want the wood for the shelf to be cut at 20” long you could use whatever thickness you like but I used a 1/2” board. Then I took my 20” long board and in each corner, I used a ¾” paddle bit and drilled my holes for the rope to tie off. After I had that piece cut I went to cut my piece that will be mounted to the wall.
I cut it into a square that was 5 ½” by 5 ½” this board was 2” thick. Then I cut the top edges at a 45 degree angle just to give it a little style. Then on the back of my 5 ½” by 5 ½” square I used the same paddle bit and centered it and only went 1/2 way thru so I could put my knob in later. After I had my hole for the knob I used a keyhole bit and centered that above the hole I already had drilled. I chose to do the keyhole for easy hanging. After I had all my boards cut and holes. I stained my boards and let them dry outside.
I gathered my rope and measured out 50” taped the end where I was going to be cutting to keep it from fraying, then cut the rope. I did this twice for my 2 pieces of rope. Once, I had all my boards stained and dried I took my two pieces of rope and laid them on the counter in an x-form crossing them. I then placed them through the 4 holes and tied them off with a chunky knot.
Finally, the fun part! I took 1 washer and 1 bolt and put them on the front. This is important because without adding these as a spacer the rope will not fit over most knobs.
I also used another washer and nut on the back side
I then secured the nut using pliers because most people’s fingers will not fit into the hole to tighten fully. Once tightened Its ready to mount to the wall.
Hang it in on wall with a nail and place the rope over the knob. Even the rope up if it needs to be by moving the knots up or down
Here are a few I did with different stains and knobs.
it's done In my bathroom and I decorated it. This is a fairly easy project that only takes a couple of hours. You can also buy them at Gilbert Marketplace.
