Today for our chemistry secrets post, we are sharing the incredible things you can do with aspirin!

Yes, it’s true! Aspirin is such a fascinating chemical that not only helps your health, but it can be used for dozens of other things.

I love sharing these chemistry secrets posts with you because it is a great way to learn something new and make your life easier!

For skincare tips with aspirin, be sure to check out the link at the bottom.

Aspirin is originally derived from a plant and has been used for thousands of years medicinally.
Remove Yellow Sweat Stains

While there are many neat ways to remove stains from clothes (like our favorite one in our eBook), this is a really handy method to know if you are in a bind.

Crush up some aspirin (a few tablets) and mix with water to form a paste. Apply to the stain and rub around gently. Wash clothes like normal, or you can rinse the aspirin off in the sink after it sits for 15-20 minutes.

Remove other Protein Based Stains

Use this same method for other protein based stains (food stains). Again, if you are traveling or run out of stain remover, this is just a really neat thing to keep in mind.
Use it in the Garden

This is an old favorite chemistry trick of mine. You can use aspirin in a pinch to treat fungal issues on plant leaves. Although we have many other methods on our website, this is a great tip to use when you don't have anything else on hand. To find out the chemistry on why this actually works, be sure to click the blog post link at the bottom.

How to Treat Black Spots on Plants and Other Fungal Issues

  • 2 tablets of aspirin
  • 1 quart of water

  1. Crush up aspirin into powder.
  2. Mix with one quart of water.
  3. Add to a spray bottle.
  4. Spray on leaves that contain black spots, mildew or other fungal issues. Or spray it on leaves to prevent fungus.

This can also help prevent fungal issues if your plants are susceptible to it. I have used this on roses numerous times and it is great!

For really bad black spots, be sure to search our website (chemistrycachet.com) for tips on getting rid of them with other methods. We have a big post on this specifically for roses too.
Did you know that aspirin can also be used to treat certain skin issues like bug bites and blemishes? Find out how here!

Just make sure to keep it away from pets, as it could kill a dog by making its heart stop.

Really, my vet had prescribed aspirin for pain for my old German Sheperd's hips. Granted you need to know the dosage and use the coated type to prevent stomach upset. Never had an issue from years of using aspirin on our dogs (I'm 65, so have had a few dogs). Also, the spacing an aspirin was morning and night, not every 4-6 hrs. You definitely don't want to give your dog Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Aspirin will kill cats, however. Just talk to your vet before giving pets any human medicines. Had to keep Benadryl on hand for the bullmastiff as she was allergic to bee stings, along with a steroid. Luckily, the same GSD, seemed to realized that after her bee sting and any bee that entered the home he chased down and took care of it. Had to pick up the carcass of the bee, so she didn't step on the stinger end.

      Aspirin Dosage for Dogs

What is the dosage of aspirin for dogs? If your dog needs aspirin, your vet will let you know how much is safe. Never give your dog new medications without your vet’s approval. One dosage of aspirin for dogs should be given once or twice daily.

Your vet will give you a recommended dosage, but here’s the average aspirin dose for dogs based on weight:

      • 0 – 5 pounds: 25 – 50 mg
      • 5 – 10 pounds: 50 – 100 mg
      • 10 – 20 pounds: 100 – 200 mg
      • 20 – 40 pounds: 200 – 400 mg
      • 40 – 60 pounds: 300 – 600 mg
      • 60 – 80 pounds: 400 – 800 mg
      • 80 – 100+ pounds: 500 – 1,000 mg

How Does Aspirin Work for Dogs?

Aspirin can soothe your dog’s pain as it would for your body. Damaged tissues in the body release prostaglandins, which are chemicals that cause the tissue to swell. The nerves in the dog’s body then sense pain and send signals to alert the brain.

But if your dog takes aspirin, the medication blocks enzymes called cyclooxygenases, which create prostaglandins. Reducing this production also reduces the pain and swelling in your dog’s body. Aspirin also has the potential to reduce heart problems, blood clots, and risks of stroke. Yet, it is unlikely your dog will ever need it for those extreme conditions.
