I have built in bookcases beside my fireplace and wanted to add doors to the bottom section. Using barn door hardware (that I made myself), I knew this would be a easy DIY.
You could also do this project to a free standing bookcase.
I wanted to use the bottom a shelf to hang the door.
I began by measuring the area to determine how big the door needed to be, which was half of the width of the bookcase.
I purchased a piece of 2’ x 4’ x 1/2” oak and cut it to size. Using this size, I was able to get two doors out of one piece of wood.

I could have stopped there and either painted or stained the wood but I wanted to add some trim.
I purchased moulding that matched my fireplace

I used a miter saw to cut my angles set at 45 degrees.
I began by making my first angle cut, flipping the moulding to the back.
Tip - cutting on the “front” of the moulding will cause it to split so always turn your moulding to the back to cut. But remember, your cuts will be reversed.
To insure a perfect cut:
A-place your first piece of cut moulding onto the board, lining the cut end to the edge of your board (To the left)
B & C- with the uncut end to the right, mark the back of the moulding where the board ends
D- cut your right end using the mark you made as the outside point.
You want to cut each piece of moulding with longer edge to the outside /_____\
Once the four pieces of moulding were cut:
A-applied glue (I used Everbond)
B-I used brads to attach the boards
C-Using a staple gun
With the outside edge framed, I wanted to add another frame to the inside.
Using 4” pieces of scrap wood, I placed the pieces along the inside four edges.
I cut the moulding as I did before, using the scrap wood as my guide.
Once the inside frame was complete,
A-I applied glue to the backs of the moulding
B-I tacked them using my staple gun
C-I countersunk the nail heads
D-And filled the holes with wood filler, sanding them when dry
I painted the entire door white using a semi gloss paint.
I measured and hung the hardware onto the door.
I hung the door and added the hardware.
I love my new custom door.

Great Idea! But on another subject, I see several post with Scottie items in them? Do you all have Scottish Terriers! Best dogs in the world, I have 3 now had 4 until Sept 2017 when we lost one of our boys suddenly.

Just wanted to comment on the Scotties.

You did a great job on the door and hardware (great instructions). Why don't you use some wood and build a u shaped platform for the tv to sit on and the cable box to fit in? Not a permanent shelf but something to blend in and not look like a makeshift riser? Does this make sense? Not meant to be critical but to offer an idea. LOOKS GREAT.
