DIY Conversation Heart Pillows

I’m not sure what the genesis of these pillows was…hmmm…for some reason I just felt the need to make Conversation Heart Pillows.
I have seen others out and about on the googler machine, but I wanted mine to really look like conversation hearts…with straight sides....in other words, a boxed heart pillow.
I am sending these pillows to our daughter for a Valentine’s Day gift, so I put on one of our oft-used mantras, as well as one of my favorite terms of endearment as the messages on the hearts.
If you need some prompting for Conversation Heart messages, search the internet...there are several lists out there.
The first step was finding the right size piece of foam so that I could have boxed sides. This one with a depth of 3" was perfect.

I have included a video at the bottom of the post for those, like me, who like to see it in action.
Using the skills I learned in kindergarten (or was it 1st grade) I folded a piece of paper in half and drew half of a heart so that it was symmetrical. I cut it out and traced it onto the foam.

I duplicated the heart on the top and bottom of the foam (see the video) so that I would be able to have guidelines on both sides when I used my electric carving knife to cut the shape.
I cut the same heart shape out of low loft batting (optional), as well as cutting out strips of 3" batting for the sides. By putting batting on, I wasn't so nervous about any bumps in my foam.
I cut the heart shape using my pattern, but I added 3/4" seam allowance all the way around. I also cut 4.5" strips for the sides. I pinned the sides to the heart, making sure that I didn't pin down any creases or folds.

For what it's worth, I pinned the side strip to the heart different for each pillow. I found it easier to have the ends of the strips meet at the bottom of the heart instead of the top, between the two bumps.
I made two heart pillows and on one I added a mini pom pom edging.

Sewing was slow, but not difficult. You just want to make sure you don't sew down any creases or folds...it really was a matter of manipulating the fabric with each stitch.
Once one side was done, I fitted it on to the heart shape and pinned the side to the second heart shape for half of the pillow. This helped me make sure that it fitted snug around the pillow. I only did half as I hand stitched the other half once done.
Chalk and a ruler helped me make sure my letters were straight. I used my Cricut and cut my sayings out of Iron on foil.
Then it was just a matter of stuffing the form in to the pillow and stitching up the other side.
I am getting these in the mail to my daughter today, so that she can enjoy them for a couple of days before Valentine's Day. I easily made these two pillows in a day, so if you get started...you could knock out a bunch.
