These are the before pictures of this project. We finished this beautiful Secretary Desk, with a sexy little black lace finish. We created an entirely new finish with Lace and Wood Icing Textura Paste
Notice the attached embellishments and the damaged veneer on the drawer front. These kind of challenges are what makes Textura Paste the best choice for repairs and creating unique textured finishes. It is the most durable and color accepting product on today's market.
Before
Remove the large embellishment.
I have never been fond of this sunburst design on furniture, so I was happy to find it  easy to pop right off.  This left me with a clean canvass to work with for creating a custom design.
Fill holes and repair veneer with Textura
I sanded over the damaged veneer, then I applied a thin coat of  Wood Icing Textura Paste to smooth over the uneven surface. I forgot to take a picture, but I also filled in the drawer pull holes, in anticipation of using new pulls that may not fit the existing holes.  I almost always do this, just in case.  But if I decide to use the existing pulls, it is very easy to re-drill the holes.
We apply Textura over lace with a trowel.
For every piece I ever finish, I do not touch it with paint until I have cleaned it with a warm bucket of water and a squirt or two of Dawn dish detergent. I rinse thoroughly with a bucket of water containing one part vinegar and nine parts water. Dry this thoroughly.  If it is a shiny surface I do a quick scuff sand with a sanding block.  Wipe off the dust with a damp cloth.
Spread Textura and remove the lace immediate
Lay the lace down on the surface (textured side down).  Spread the  Textura Paste over the lace, smoothing over and lightly pressing over the lace.  Do not apply too thick or too thin.  either one will not give good results.
*This takes a little practice, so practice on a sample board first.  Flip the lace over both ways to see which side of the lace renders the best design.

Allow the Textura to dry.
Once you have the lace covered with the Textura Paste, gently lift the lace off while the paste is still wet.  Do not let the lace sit for any time at all with the Textura Paste over the top.  If the paste dries up the slightest bit, it will come up with the lace when you lift it off.
Rinse your lace immediately and hang it to dry. Allow the paste on your project to dry to the touch.
To continue the pattern overlap the lace and adjust the lace so the design is continued in the same manner.  You can see your design through the lace in order to lay it down exactly the same.  Then spread the paste over the remaining area.

Allow this to dry to a hard surface.  It may take overnight or a few hours in a warm dry area, depending on the humidity and how thick or wet your paste is.  You can speed up the process with a warm hair dryer.
Stain with Licorice Black, Glazing Color
Here we have painted over our lace design with our Wood Icing Furniture Glaze, Licorice Black
After the Black Licorice dries, sand the color off the top of the lace pattern. Dust off the the sand and grit with a damp cloth.
Next we have stained our sanded areas with our Wood Icing Furniture Glaze, Mud Pie. It now looks like an elegant lace finish.
Once this was dry, we applied a coat of our Wood Icing Poly-Acrylic Top Coat.  We used the Satin Finish.

What products and steps did you use on the non-lace parts of the piece? The whole thing is stunning, has just a hint of Asian appeal without being kitchy. I love it.

Very beautiful. Probably above my skill level, but maybe....

How do you keep the lace in place while applying the textura? Does the lace tend to stretch out if shape while applying? Thank you for advice.

    This is truly stunning!

I am curious about something. I looked up Wood Icing to find out more about it but the company has gone out of business since your project was created. Do you have a suggestion for a different texture product?

    This is seriously beautiful!!
