Unique Home and Garden DIY Planting Ideas
Let’s face it, sometimes plain ol’ clay pots just don’t cut it! Perhaps you live in small Minneapolis apartment and you really just need to find a way to add a little flavor to your plants, particularly if they’re in a small patio garden. Sadly, many decorative pots cost a pretty penny to buy from your local garden shop or interior design store. Luckily, there are many easy and unusual DIY planters you can easily make when you’re not busy with work or school!
These projects are great ways to increase your curb appeal whether you have an apartment or a large front yard:
Birdcage Planter
The birdcage planter is not only easy to make, but also adds a whimsical touch to any porch, room, or garden.
Vintage bird cages and decorative birdcages without trays at the bottom are fantastic options because it makes drainage a cinch. Cages without trays won’t hold dirt very well though, so line the bottom with a few layers of sphagnum moss to keep everything in.
If your cage has a tray, then your project just got a little bit more challenging. Really shallow trays are easy to work around. You just put a layer of draining rocks at the bottom or let the dirt come out of the exposed sides. Of course, birdcage planters with deep trays are more problematic for drainage. If your birdcage is bigger, you can place a stand-alone potted plant into the birdcage for decoration. Of course, if you feel like getting fancy, you can always drill some holes into the bottom to allow for proper drainage.
Bundt Pan Planter
Have an old bundt cake pan that has seen better days? You’ve just found yourself a unique planter. This is a quick and easy way to spruce up the look of your kitchen and get rid of something old at the same time!
Use a drill to put a few holes in the bottom on your old pan so that the plants can drain. After that, you know the drill. Just add in some dirt and get planting!
With a few washers, hooks, and little extra effort, these bundt lake planters can also be transformed into hanging planters for your deck or any interior space.
Milk Carton Planter
You may remember doing this little project when you were young. The milk carton planter is by far one of the easiest DIY planter options out there. If you’re looking to customize your planters without spending much money or using power tools, then this is the craft project for you!
The process is amazingly simple. Just take a pair of scissors, cut off the top of the carton, cut a small hole in the bottom for drainage, fill with soil, and then plant! It really can’t get any simpler.
Don’t be fooled. Cheap and easy doesn’t mean it has to look like it. The great part of milk carton planters aside from their low-price tag is that they are easily customizable. Paint them any color you want, with any stain that you want, in any pattern you want. If you’re striving for that handmade look, hand paint little flowers on the sides. If you are going for a more minimalist aesthetic, paint it all black or white. The options are endless.
Old Tire Planter
Tires make for fantastic planters because they are not only unique, but they are also a great way to promote environmental awareness. Instead of having these giant rubber circles taken to the dump to decompose for thousands of years, you’re putting it to good use!
Making a tire planter is easy and versatile. If you want a ground-based planter, simply throw the tire on the ground with the center facing upwards, fill in the hole with dirt, and boom! You have yourself a tire planter.
Looking for a unique hanging planter? A tire can work for that! Just throw a chain around it, hang it up, and put dirt along the bottom part of the tire. It looks especially beautiful with any cascading flowers or vine plants.
If you still want to use the tire as a planter but don’t want it to look too much like a tire, you can always cut and invert it to hide the treads. Also, feel free to paint the tire for a little decorative flavor.
Paint Can Planter
Going through a lot of changes around the house? Well then it’s time to kill two birds with one stone. How many times have we gotten through with painting or re-painting a house, only to find that you’re left with a lot of useless cans afterward? Well, it’s time to put those cans to use!
Once you have some empty paint cans, all you have to do is peel off the labels, drill a hole or two in the bottom, and suddenly you have some nicely sized planters for flowers and herbs.
Of course, if don’t want the obnoxious silver color, you can feel free to decorate and paint the cans as you wish.
You can use the same process for cookie and candy tins, if you want to add a more vintage flair to your gardening space without all the hand painting required by paint cans.
Old Boot Planter
Much like the birdcage planter, the old boot planter will add an element of playfulness and whimsy to your garden. It’s also a great way to reuse old shoes that you love, but can’t wear any more. Boots work best because they are large enough for bigger plants and match the outdoorsy theme, but any shoe will do.
Begin by taking the soles out of the shoes, creating one less layer for you to drill through. After that, puncture some holes in the bottom of the shoe so the plant can drain properly. The only thing left to do is to fill the boots with soil and getting planting!
These steps are surprisingly simple considering how wonderful the results are!
